Elijah Brainerd
Elijah Brainerd was baptised at Middletown, Connecticut, on 26 March 1678. His parents were Daniel Brainerd, one of the first settlers of Haddam, and his first wife, Hannah Spencer. He was one of seven sons, with Daniel, James, Joshua, William, Caleb and Hezekiah, and had one sister, Hannah.
His mother died when he was about thirteen. His father married Elizabeth (Wakeman) Arnold in 1693 and, after her, Hannah (Spencer) Sexton, the widow of George Sexton, in 1698.
On 26 September 1699 he married Mary Bushnell of Norwich, the eldest daughter of Joseph Bushnell and Mary Leffingwell. They lived at Haddam and had nine children: Mary in 1700, Abigail in 1702, Joseph in 1704, Elijah in 1706, Thankful in 1709, Rachel in 1712, Jabez in 1714/5, Esther in 1717 and Phineas in 1720.
His father died on 1 April 1715. The estate was valued at 834 pounds 10 shillings and threepence. The will was unclear, and on 2 May the children settled it among themselves, with their stepmother's agreement. Elijah signed with his brothers and with his sister and her husband, Thomas Gates.
Mary died in September 1735. Elijah died at Haddam on 20 April 1740. Their son Phineas was then nineteen.
