Hannah Spencer
Hannah Spencer was born about 1641 at Lynn, Massachusetts, a daughter of Gerard and Hannah Spencer. Her father had been born at Stotfold in Bedfordshire, and about 1663 or 1664 he became one of the first settlers of Haddam, on the Connecticut River. His will of 1683 names "my two sons Daniel Brainard and William," calling her husband his son, and her brother John's dying words of 1682 speak of "his own sister Hannah the Wife of Daniel Braynard."
About the same time she married Daniel Brainerd, another of Haddam's first settlers. Their children were seven sons, Daniel, James, Joshua, William, Caleb, Elijah and Hezekiah, and one daughter, Hannah, who married Thomas Gates. Elijah was baptised at Middletown on 26 March 1678.
She died before 1691, or about that time, by the Brainerd genealogy. Her husband married twice more. In 1693 he married Elizabeth (Wakeman) Arnold, and in 1698 another Hannah Spencer, the widow of George Sexton. When he died in 1715 his children made an agreement with "our hond. mother-in-law, Hannah Brainard." In the speech of the time a mother-in-law could mean a stepmother, and that Hannah was the third wife. Two of the three men who took the inventory were Nathaniel Spencer and Gerrard Spencer, probably of her own family.
