Elijah K. Flowers was born about 1825 in North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Watson, daughter of John and Elizabeth E. Watson, about 1848. In 1850 the census found them in Anson County, North Carolina: Elijah K., 25, Elizabeth, 26, and their first child, John O., one year old.

A daughter, Darewa Ann Eliza, was born in North Carolina in March 1851. By 1860 the family had moved west to Itawamba County, in the northeast corner of Mississippi, where the census listed E. K. Flowers, his wife Elizabeth, and six children: John, 12, Elza, 11, M. F., 8, William M., 6, Holland, 4, and a baby boy not yet named. That baby was Ludy Winfield Flowers, who gave his own birthplace as Iuka, Mississippi.

Elijah was killed in a hunting accident in Mississippi about 1868, by a family account. Elizabeth took the children to her parents in Decatur County, Tennessee. When Ludy died in Henderson County, Tennessee, in 1940, his death record named his parents as Elijah Flowers and Elizabeth Watson.
