Darewa Ann Eliza Flowers
Darewa Ann Eliza Flowers was born on 14 March 1851 in North Carolina, the daughter of Elijah K. Flowers and Elizabeth Watson. She went by Eliza. The year before she was born, the census found her parents in Anson County, North Carolina: Elijah K. Flowers, 25, his wife Elizabeth, 26, and their son John O., one year old.
A family account traces the next twenty years. Before 1860 the family moved west to Itawamba County, in northeast Mississippi, where the youngest children were born. Her father was killed in a hunting accident in Mississippi about 1868, and her mother took the children north to Decatur County, Tennessee, where her own parents, John and Elizabeth Watson, were then living. Eliza was there with her mother and grandparents in 1870.
On 1 February 1872 she married John Horn at Carthage, in Leake County, Mississippi. He was a Confederate veteran three years older. They settled in Leake County and had seven children: Eligha Jefferson in 1872, James William in 1875, John Oliver in 1878, Nancy Jane, called Sissie, in 1880, Annie in 1882, Alvah Cecil in 1890 and Lafayette in 1896. In June 1880 the census found her at Edinburg, Leake County, as Eliza Horne, born in North Carolina, with John and the four oldest.
Her mother died in Henderson County, Tennessee, on 26 May 1880, and was buried at Dukes Cemetery there. Her stone reads "Wife of E. K. Flowers" and "Our mother".
Eliza died on 5 June 1917 at Coosa, in Leake County, aged sixty six, and was buried at Zion Hill Cemetery. Three months later John, now a widower, applied for a Confederate pension. Her son John Oliver had died before her, in 1911.
