Elijah M. Hart
Elijah Montgomery Hart was born in Randolph County, in the mountains of western Virginia. His burial record at Gnatty Creek Cemetery gives the day as 9 June 1819, and the censuses of 1850 and 1860 give his age as 31 and 41.
On 22 July 1840, in Randolph County, he married Sarah C. Little. He was twenty one and she was sixteen, the daughter of Robert Little and Mary Eleanor Caplinger of Beverly. Their children were Creed William (1841), Theodore Butcher (1845), Mary Elizabeth (1848), Lee Ann (1850), Vernon Dorsey (1853), Eveline (1857) and Edgar Marlett (1859), all born at or near Beverly, the county seat.
In 1844 he was one of the captains of the Randolph County militia, the force every able-bodied man of military age was enrolled in. In 1850 the census found him at house 613 in the county with Sarah and the four eldest children, and a young man of 21, David Nutter. In 1860 there were seven children at home.
In 1866 he sat on the county's first Board of Supervisors. From 1866 to 1872 a board of that name ran the affairs of each West Virginia county in place of the old county court.
By 1870 the family had moved west to Buckhannon in Upshur County. His daughter Lee Ann had married James H. Pinnell there in December 1869, and in that record he is named as E. M. Hart. Mary Elizabeth married William H. Hilleary there in May 1873. By 1880 Elijah and Sarah were in Elk district, Harrison County, with Eva and Vernon at home.
Sarah died at Romines Mills on 12 March 1885. Lee Ann died in 1888. Elijah outlived them both by twenty years. He died at Romines Mills in 1908, aged eighty eight or eighty nine, and was buried at Gnatty Creek, where they already lay. Lee Ann's son Dorsey Montgomery Pinnell, born in 1875, carried his middle name.
