Eliza Emily Pickett
Eliza Emily Pickett was born in Kentucky on 30 December 1860; her death certificate gives the date, and the census of 1900, which took her down as Emily E., agrees on the month and the year. Her father was Thomas Puckett, born in Ohio; the certificate spells him Puckert. Her mother's name even her own son did not know: the certificate's maiden-name line reads Don't know.
By about 1887 she had married William Higgins, an Illinois man fifteen years older. Their first two children, William T. and Alice, were born in Arkansas in 1887 and 1891, and by 1894 the family was farming in Mississippi County, Missouri, first in James Bayou Township at the settlement called Three States village, and by 1920 in St. James Township. Five of her children are named in the censuses: William T., Alice, Georgia, Mary and Goldia Lavern, born across eighteen years.
Two certificates carry her last years. In July 1920 Goldia died at fifteen of a kidney disease, and the certificate, naming her mother Emma Picket, sent the girl to Brownsville, Kentucky for burial. Sometime in the next two and a half years William died, leaving her a widow. On 19 February 1923, after six days of lobar pneumonia, Eliza died at East Prairie, sixty-two years old. Her son William Higgins Jr. gave the particulars, and on 21 February she was buried where Goldia had been taken, at Brownsville, Kentucky.
