Alice Higgins
Alice Higgins was born 24 May 1891, by her memorial. The census of 1900, which lists her as Alice H., nine years old and a daughter, says she was born in Arkansas, as was her elder brother William T. Her parents were William Higgins, an Illinois-born farmer, and Eliza Emily Pickett, born in Kentucky in 1860, and by 1894 the family had come up from Arkansas into Mississippi County, Missouri, where the enumerator of 1900 found them at the settlement of Three States village in James Bayou Township. The census of 1910 still has Allie M., eighteen and single, on her father's James Bayou farm.
Within about a year she married a Townsend. Her daughter Mamie Christine Townsend was born 8 November 1911. The East Prairie memorials say the husband was James Townsend, who died in May 1914 aged twenty-eight; but the two contemporary records that name James's wife, the 1910 census and his own death certificate, both call her Clara, so which Townsend Alice married is an open question. By January 1920 she was the wife of George Arthur Futrell, a St. James Township farmer of twenty-four, and the census of that month lists the household: George and Allie, Christine, eight, written in as a daughter, and the couple's own children J. W., three, and Dorothy M., two months.
More Futrell children followed: Opal Nadine, born and died 1922; Bill, born 1923; Ruby Margaret, born 1924, who married William O'Neal Croney; and Birdie, born and died 1930. The certificates of the two infants each carry Alice's maiden name in the county's own hand: Allie Higgins, born at East Prairie by the 1922 certificate, where she herself was the informant, and born in Kentucky by the 1930 one, where George was. The 1900 census's Arkansas, given by her parents when she was nine, is preferred over both.
Her twenties and thirties were bracketed by family funerals. Her sister Goldia died at fifteen in 1920 and was buried at Brownsville, Kentucky. Her father died between 1920 and 1923. Her mother died of pneumonia at East Prairie in February 1923 and was carried to Brownsville after her. Alice died 9 January 1980, aged eighty-eight, and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery at East Prairie under the name Alice H Higgins Futrell.
