Eliza Jane Moore
Eliza Jane Moore was born on 7 July 1857, by her stone, in Pike County, Kentucky, the daughter of Nies and Susannah Moore. On 22 June 1876 she married George Stanley in Wise County, Virginia; the clerk entered her as Liza Moore, seventeen, born in Pike County, and named her parents. The censuses of 1910 and 1920 also give her birthplace as Kentucky. She lived near Clintwood and Isom, in what became Dickenson County, for the rest of her life.
Her son James Anderson Stanley was born in 1877. When he married in 1897 the register named his parents as G. W. and Eliza Stanley, and his 1958 death certificate names his mother as Liza Moore.
George died in November 1931. Eliza lived five years more at her home near Isom, and died there just before Christmas 1936, aged seventy-nine. The paper put her death on the Saturday before Christmas, 19 December; her stone gives 20 December. A fall some months before had left her failing. The Dickenson Forum called her "one of the best known pioneer women of the Cumberland Mountain section of this county", and gave her age as 83. Her funeral was held at her home on the Sunday, and she was buried in the family cemetery. She was buried beside him in the Ramey Flats Cemetery. Her stone is carved with an open book and reads "Eliza Stanley, July 7, 1857, Dec. 20, 1936, Our Grandmother."
