James Anderson Stanley
James Anderson Stanley, who went by Anderson, was born on 26 March 1877, by his death certificate, or in March 1878, by the 1900 census and his stone. His parents were George Stanley and Eliza Jane Moore, of the Clintwood country in what became Dickenson County, Virginia.
On 17 January 1897 he married Amey Mullins in Dickenson County. The register gives his age as eighteen and hers as seventeen, and names his parents as G. W. and Eliza Stanley. Their first child, Rosa Belle, was born late in 1896.
In June 1900 the young family lived in Clintwood town, the county seat. James A. Stanley was 22, three years married, and Amey was 21, with Rosabell, 2, and Mary Jane, 1. More children followed: Lou Emma, Callie, Bethana, Clonas, Hatcher and a son Cowan among them. His daughters married into the Mullins, Ramey and Artrip families of the county.
His eldest daughter Rosa married George Johnson in 1919 and died of blood poisoning in October 1924, at twenty-seven. Her death certificate gives her father as J. A. Stanley, born in Dickenson.
Anderson Stanley died at Dwale, in Dickenson County, on 2 February 1958, aged eighty, and Amey followed him that June. They are buried together in the Ramey Flats Cemetery near Clintwood, beside his parents and their daughter Rosa. His stone reads "Father, Anderson Stanley, Mar. 26, 1878, Feb. 2, 1958."
