Eliza Selina Irwin

Eliza Selina Irwin was the eldest daughter of Eyles Irwin, a retired East India Company servant, traveller and poet, and his wife Honor Brooke. Her father's people were Irish; the family was described as "of county Fermanagh" and "of Slieve Russell, co. Fermanagh."

In March 1810, at Cheltenham, she married Benjamin Hayward Browne, a physician to the forces. They lived at Belle Vue, near Stroud, and had at least five children. Louisa Constantia was christened at Stroud in August 1815. A son born in 1828 was baptized in Paris and given the name Francis Nicholas Irwin, after her own family.

Her husband died at Belle Vue in April 1832. She lived another eighteen years as his widow. Her daughter Honoria Lucy died at Cheltenham in January 1837, and in 1841 Louisa married the Rev. William Harris Roach.

She died at Cheltenham on 22 November 1850, aged 61. The Gentleman's Magazine printed: "At Cheltenham, aged 61, Eliza-Selina, relict of Benjamin Hayward Browne, of Belle Vue, co. Glouc. Physician to the Forces, and dau. of the late Eyles Irwin, H.E.I.C.S. and of Slieve Russell, co. Fermanagh." "Relict" means widow; "H.E.I.C.S." means of the Honourable East India Company's Service.
