Louisa Constantia Browne
Louisa Constantia Browne was christened at Stroud, Gloucestershire, on 23 August 1815, together with her sister Honoria Lucy Hayward Browne. The two were probably twins. Their father was Benjamin Hayward Browne, M.D., a Physician to the Forces then on half pay, of Belle Vue near Stroud. Their mother, Eliza Selina, was the eldest daughter of Eyles Irwin, the East India Company servant who wrote of his voyage up the Red Sea. Later censuses give her birth as 1816 or 1817, at Stroud.
She grew up one of eleven children. Her elder sister Selina Frances had been born in 1813. After the twins came Benjamin Hayward Hudleston, Eyles Irwin Caulfeild, Emma Ann, Lucia Emily, Malcolm Bruce, Eugenia Cicely and Julia Eliza, and finally Francis Nicholas Irwin, baptized in Paris in 1828. Her father died at Belle Vue in April 1832, when she was sixteen. Honoria died at Cheltenham in 1837, and that year Selina married the Rev. William Cockin at Bath.
She married the Rev. William Harris Roach in the spring of 1841, in the Gloucester registration district. The notice called her the daughter "of the late B. H. Browne, D.M., of Belle Vue, Gloucestershire." Her husband was then curate of Painswick. Their son Thomas was born there on 17 May 1842, and a second son, William Irwin, was baptized at Painswick in November 1843. William Irwin carried her mother's family name.
From 1844 her husband was perpetual curate of the new church of St Paul at Whiteshill, near Stroud, and they lived there for twenty-seven years. In 1851 the household held their sons Thomas and William Irwin, four younger children entered as Louisa S., Selina S., Francis J. and Eugenia E., and two servants. In 1858 she and her husband were among the owners of Irish land sold in Dublin, with her brothers and sisters. When the family left Whiteshill in July 1871, the parishioners presented "a valuable piano ... to Mrs. and the Misses Roach." She spent her last years at the rectory of Broad Blunsdon in Wiltshire.
She died on 6 January 1888 and was buried at St Leonard's, Broad Blunsdon. A transcription of her gravestone gives her name as Louisa Constantia Browne Roach. Her husband died nine months later.
