Elizabeth Ann Cox
Elizabeth Ann Cox was born on 5 November 1842, in Shannon County, Missouri, by the account of a memorial to her. Her son's death certificate gives her birthplace as Missouri. A memorial names her parents as Phineas "Fin" Cox and Mary Minerva Robards.
She married Andrew Jackson, who was born in Illinois, and for a time they lived there. Their son Darius was born in Illinois on 12 December 1876. Memorials give them other sons, James Lemuel, born about 1868, and Thomas Merritt, born about 1878.
Andrew was gone from the family by the end of 1879. On 16 December 1879, in Fayette County, Illinois, she married Joseph H. Shockey, a Kentucky-born man of 22, as Elizabeth Jackson. She was 37. They had two more children, Mary Elizabeth, born at Shelbyville in December 1881, and William Henry, born in Fayette County in September 1882. A note on her memorial says the 1900 census counted nine children born to her, of whom five were living.
In December 1912 her son Darius died at 36, leaving a widow and young children near Van Buren. Elizabeth, then of Van Buren, gave the facts for his death certificate. She died exactly three years later, on 24 December 1915, at Ellington in Reynolds County, and was buried in the Neely Cemetery. Her stone reads "Elizabeth, wife of J. H. Shockey" and "At rest."
