Darius Andrew Jackson
Darius Andrew Jackson was born on 12 December 1876 in Illinois. A memorial to him places his birth in Bowling Green Township, Fayette County. His father, Andrew Jackson, was also born in Illinois, and his mother, Elizabeth Cox, was a Missourian, born in Shannon County in 1842. The family came back to the Missouri Ozarks while Darius was young, and his mother later married Joseph Henry Shockey.
On 9 July 1896 Darius married Mary Jane Davis, a girl of eighteen from Reynolds County. They settled in Carter County, near Van Buren. In 1910 they lived on the Ellington Road in Carter Township. Darius was 33 and Mary 30, and they had four children at home: Stella, 13, Alpha, 11, Seva, 7, and Andrew, 4. A fifth, Floyd, was born about 1911. Two houses up the road lived John J. Chilton, who later wrote down the old stories of the county for the Van Buren paper.
Darius made railroad ties. His death certificate calls him a tie and timber worker in the manufacture of railroad ties. Tie makers felled oaks in the hills and squared them by hand into crossties for the railroads. He worked for J. M. Haynes and lived on the Chicopee side of the river.
In December 1912 he fell ill. A doctor attended him from 19 December, and he died at nine in the morning on 24 December, Christmas Eve, of what the doctor called basilar meningitis. He was 36. He was buried in the cemetery near Van Buren on Christmas Day. His mother, by then Elizabeth Shockey, gave the facts for his death certificate.
The Van Buren paper wrote that he left "a widow and six children, some of whom are quite small," in very straitened circumstances. His employer passed a subscription list for the family. Mary Jane later married Thomas Hill and had one more son, Spencer Hill.
His mother, Elizabeth Ann Cox, outlived him by three years. She died at Ellington, in Reynolds County, on 24 December 1915, Christmas Eve, three years to the day after her son.
