Elizabeth Charde

1587-1643 · Dorchester in Massachusetts → Windsor CT
Born 1587, probably Dorset, England
Died 1643
Children include Abigail

Elizabeth Charde married Aaron Cooke at Thorncombe on 2 September 1610. Where and when she was born is not certain. One Elisabethe Chard was christened at Netherbury, two miles north of Bridport, on 10 July 1586, with no parent named in the index. Later compilers give her birth as 1587 or 1589. The Netherbury baptism may be hers, but nothing ties it to her.

Aaron Cooke was a joiner. The couple settled at Bridport, on the Dorset coast. Their daughter Elizabeth was baptised there on 8 September 1611, and their son Aaron on 20 March 1613/4.

In 1615 she lost both her daughter and her husband. An Elizabeth Cooke, evidently the little girl, was buried at Bridport on 10 July 1615. "Aaron Cooke, joyner" was buried there on 28 December 1615. She was left a widow of about twenty eight with a son not yet two.

On 19 June 1616 she married Thomas Ford at Bridport, as his second wife. He was probably the Thomas Ford who had married Joane Way at Powerstock, six miles north east of Bridport, in 1610. A "Joane Forde" was buried there in May 1615. That first marriage left him a daughter, Mary or Sarah, who became Elizabeth's stepdaughter.

She bore five Ford children. Joan was baptised at Bridport on 8 June 1617 and Abigail on 8 October 1619. By 1623 the family had moved fifteen and a half miles east to Dorchester, the county town. At Holy Trinity there her son Thomas was baptised on 21 September 1623 and buried on 6 October. Hephzibah was baptised on 15 May 1625. Hannah was baptised on 1 February 1628/9 and buried on 28 March 1629. Family papers compiled in 1995 say Thomas and Hannah were buried at Piddlehinton.

In 1630 the Dorchester company crossed in the Mary and John. She went with her husband, his daughter by his first marriage, her son Aaron Cooke, who was sixteen, and her daughters Joan, Abigail and Hephzibah. They settled at Dorchester in Massachusetts. Joan married Roger Clap there on 6 November 1633, at sixteen.

In 1636 the family moved to Windsor on the Connecticut River. There Abigail became the second wife of John Strong, and Hephzibah married Richard Lyman. Her son Aaron Cooke grew up to be Major Aaron Cooke of Windsor and Northampton.

She died at Windsor in April 1643, and Savage says it is reported that she was buried on the eighteenth of that month. Her husband married again in November 1644, a widow named Ann Scott, and lived until 1676.
