Elizabeth Clark
Elizabeth Clark was born about 1769, by the age on her gravestone. Her maiden name is not known. She married first a Moore, very probably the William Moore whose widow she was in 1804. Her daughter Nancy Ann was born in Maryland on 17 January 1785, when Elizabeth was about sixteen.
By 1803 she was in Nelson County, Kentucky, and her husband was dead. When Nancy, called Ann, married James Aud there on 26 February 1803, the bond named the bride as "Ann Moore, daughter of Elizabeth Moore". Ann was eighteen, under the age of twenty one, so a parent's consent was filed with the bond.
Fourteen months later Elizabeth married again. The Nelson County bond of 24 April 1804 reads: "CLARK, Henry A. married Elizabeth Moore, widow of William Moore, dec'd. Surety, James Aud." The surety was her own new son-in-law. A surety put his own money at risk if the marriage proved unlawful.
Two Clark sons are linked to her family on the memorials: Benjamin J. Clark, born in 1811, who died in 1881, and Joseph M. Clark, born in 1818, who died in 1890. They were Nancy's half-brothers. What became of Henry A. Clark is not known.
She went on to White County, Illinois, where her daughter's family settled. She died there on 1 October 1838, aged sixty nine, and was buried in the Aud family plot at the Moore Cemetery. Her stone is carved with a cross and reads "ELIZABETH CLARK, DIED OCT. 1, 1838, AGED 69 YEARS". Her daughter was laid beside her eleven months later, and her son-in-law the following May.
