Elizabeth Delaphene Riedel

Elizabeth Delaphene Riedel was born on 4 April 1896 at Hugo, the county seat of Lincoln County on the high plains of eastern Colorado, the first child of Peter John Riedel and Anastasia Geist. Her parents were both children of the Volga German colonies: her father had come from Herzog on the steppe above Saratov as a boy of twelve in 1887, and her mother was born in Kansas to a family from Obermonjou. They had married in 1893 and tried Colorado, and were back in Kansas by 1899, farming in Bryant Township in Graham County near the Catholic settlement of St. Peter. Elizabeth was the oldest of eight: Joseph followed in 1899, then Michael, August, Eugenia, Andrew, Bernard and Helen, the youngest born in 1915. In 1910 she was 14, the only child of the household born outside Kansas.

On 29 February 1916 she married Jacob Bieker at Gorham in Russell County, a farmer's son of the Obermonjou Biekers. Their son Alvin was born in September 1917 and their daughter Delephine Elizabeth, called Betty, on 29 December 1927. The census takers knew her as Lizzie: in 1940 she was 44, born in Colorado, at Gorham with Jacob, Albin and Betty. Her daughter carried her middle name and gave it in turn to a granddaughter.

Her father died at St. Peter in 1940 and her mother in 1938; both lie at WaKeeney. Elizabeth Bieker died on 20 February 1961, aged 64. Her flat granite marker in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Russell, cut with a cross at either end, reads ELIZABETH BIEKER, APR. 4, 1896, FEB. 20, 1961. Jacob outlived her by eleven years.
