Anastasia Geist
Anastasia Geist was born on 12 May 1874, the third child of John Geist and Catharina Barbara Gerber. Her parents had married in Russia in 1863, at Friedental on the Volga, he from Obermonjou and she from Mariental, and had come to Kansas with the first Catholic emigration, settling among the Obermonjou people at Victoria in Ellis County, where both are buried in the St. Fidelis cemetery. Her birthplace is given as Kansas by every census; if so, the Geists were among the earliest to arrive. She had eight brothers and sisters, Alexander, Anna Katherine, Adam, Michael, Christina, Maria, Anna Maria and Jacob.
In 1893, at nineteen, she married Peter John Riedel of the Herzog families, who had come over as a boy of twelve in 1887. They went to Colorado, and her first child, Elizabeth Delaphene, was born at Hugo on 4 April 1896. By 1899 they were farming in Bryant Township, Graham County, near the Catholic colony of St. Peter, and there she had seven more children: Joseph, Michael, August, Eugenia, Andrew, Bernard and Helen. The census takers never managed her name; she is Daisy in 1900 and 1925, Dandy in 1920, Anna S. in 1930. Her daughter Elizabeth married Jacob Bieker of Gorham in 1916.
Anastasia Riedel died on 24 March 1938, aged 63. She is buried with Peter, who followed her in 1940, in the WaKeeney City Cemetery under a stone that spells her Annastasia and holds a small porcelain photograph of her in round spectacles and a dark dress.
