Elizabeth Doty

Elizabeth Doty married John Lewis at Rochester, Massachusetts, on 28 February 1705/6. She was born about 1678 to 1680.

Her father is taken to be Joseph Doty of Rochester, a son of the Mayflower passenger Edward Doty. No known record names her as Joseph's daughter. The Mayflower Society's five-generation genealogy of the Doty family, published in 2000, accepts the link. E. A. Doty's family history of 1897 reached the same view by elimination: "as there was no other Elizabeth Doty living at that time unaccounted for it is probable that she was a daughter of Joseph Doty". Edward Doty was the only Doty in Plymouth Colony, and no other Elizabeth Doty, maiden or widow, is known to have been of an age to marry in 1706.

Who her mother was is not settled. Joseph Doty's wife through these years was Deborah, called Ellis in one account and Hatch in another. The 2000 genealogy also allows that Elizabeth may have been the child of Elizabeth Warren. In October 1674 Elizabeth Warren had named Joseph as the father of the child she was expecting.

Elizabeth and John Lewis had four children. Archelaus was born in 1707 and John in 1708, both recorded at Dartmouth. Susanna was born at Rochester in February 1709/10. Her husband died at Dartmouth on 24 January 1711/12, and her last child, Elizabeth, was born eleven weeks later.

In February 1729/30 her daughter Susanna married Benjamin Taber before the Dartmouth Friends. An "Elizabeth Luis" signed the certificate among the bride's family. She was probably Susanna's mother, though she could have been Susanna's younger sister, then seventeen. What became of Elizabeth after that, and whether she married again, is not known.
