Susanna Lewis
Susanna Lewis was born at Rochester, Massachusetts, on 25 February 1709/10. The town entered her as "Susana, d. John and Elizabeth". Her parents were John Lewis and Elizabeth Doty, who had married at Rochester in 1705/6. Her mother is taken to be a granddaughter of the Mayflower passenger Edward Doty.
She had two older brothers, Archelaus and John, both recorded at Dartmouth. Her father died at Dartmouth on 24 January 1711/12, before she was two. Her sister Elizabeth was born eleven weeks after his death.
On 5 February 1729/30 she married Benjamin Taber, son of Joseph Taber of Dartmouth. They married as Quakers, at the Acushnet meeting house of the Dartmouth Friends. The Friends' book records "Benjamin Taber son of Joseph Taber of Dartmouth ... And Susanna Luis daughter of John Luis late of Dartmouth ... Deceased". The date is written "this fifth day of the twelfth month called February ... one thousand seven hundred and twenty nine or thirty".
Quakers numbered the months rather than use their names, and counted from March. So February was the twelfth month, and it fell in a year that could be called 1729 or 1730. At a Quaker wedding the couple married each other before the meeting, and those present signed the certificate. The Tabers who signed included Benjamin, Susanna, Joseph, Joseph Jr., Amos and Mary. From the bride's side came "Elizabeth Luis", probably her mother.
The Dartmouth town book records at least fourteen children born to "Benjamin and Susanah" between 1730 and the 1750s. Among them was John, born 9 October 1735, later a blacksmith. She named sons Archelaus and Lewis. Her death is not recorded.
