Elizabeth Ladner
Elizabeth Ladner was born about March 1802. Her gravestone gives her age at death as eighty years and eight months. Her memorial gives her full name as Elizabeth Tryan Ladner and her birthplace as Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and names her parents as Johan Andrew Ladner and Sophia Hobbs. When her son Edmond married at Carver in 1863, the clerk wrote her maiden name as Ludman.
She married William Stringer, and they raised twelve children on Prince Edward Island and in Massachusetts, from William H. about 1824 to John T. in 1850 and Letitia. By a family account the family came down to Massachusetts in October 1854 and settled at South Carver in Plymouth County.
Four of her sons went into the Union army. In 1862 three of them died within four months. James, a corporal in Company C of the 18th Massachusetts, died of typhoid fever before Yorktown, Virginia, on 29 April. He was brought home and buried at Carver. At the end of August Joseph, of the same company, and Archy, of Company G, were killed in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the heavy Union defeat near Manassas in northern Virginia. The funeral of the two was held in the Methodist Church at Carver on 2 November 1862. A soldier of their company, John Maxim, wrote a ballad on the three brothers that the Middleboro Gazette printed in April 1863, and its last verse speaks to their parents. Her son John A. came home from his nine months' service in June 1863.
Her youngest son, John T., died at South Carver on 23 June 1865, at fifteen. William died in October 1878. Elizabeth died on 18 November 1882, aged eighty years and eight months, and was buried beside him at Union Cemetery in South Carver. Her stone reads "ELIZABETH Wife of William Stringer, died Nov. 18, 1882, Aged 80 yrs. 8 m's." and below that, "She is not dead but sleepeth" and "Gone but not forgotten."
