Edmond William Stringer was born at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 10 March 1845, by his memorial. Charlottetown was the capital of the island colony in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, then still a British colony separate from Canada. His parents were William Stringer and Elizabeth T. Ludman.

He was the ninth of twelve children. By a family account his parents brought seven of them down from the island to Massachusetts in October 1854, when Edmond was nine, and the family settled at South Carver. Four of his older brothers went into the Union army, and in 1862 three of them died. James died of typhoid fever before Yorktown, Virginia, in April. Joseph and Archy were killed together in the Second Battle of Bull Run, near Manassas in northern Virginia, at the end of August. Edmond was seventeen.

By his late teens he was in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. On 15 December 1863, at about eighteen, he married Victoria Josephine Westgate at Carver, the cranberry town north of Wareham. She was about fifteen, a Middleborough girl, the daughter of Ephraim Westgate and Sophia A. Baker. The Middleboro Gazette announced the wedding with his name written as Edward W. Stringer. The minister was Rev. E. W. Barrows, who had preached the funeral of Joseph and Archy at the Methodist Church in Carver thirteen months before.

Their first son, Ephraim Edmond, was born in 1864 and carried both his grandfather's name and his father's. Fourteen more children followed over twenty-eight years: Allen Wilton in 1865, Mary Drucilla in 1867, Erford Harrison in 1869, two daughters named Sophia, Victoria Josephine in 1876, Archey in 1877, Eunice Violey in 1879, Carrie Maud in 1881, John Clement in 1883, Henry in 1885, Effie Lile in 1886, Edmond William Jr. in 1889 and Jessie E. in 1892. Four of them died as small children.

The family settled at East Wareham, on Elm Street. Victoria died there on 10 November 1916, and Edmond gave the details for her death certificate. He outlived her by eleven years. He died at Wareham on 14 January 1928, at eighty-two. His daughter Josephine died at East Wareham five days later.

He was buried at Agawam Cemetery in Wareham, in Section A, Lot 97, under a family stone carved STRINGER down a central column. His panel reads "EDMOND W. 1843-1928". Victoria's beside it reads "VICTORIA J. 1846-1916", and below them are their son Edmond W. Jr., 1889-1913, and their daughter Carrie M., 1880-1932.
