Elizabeth Leggett
Elizabeth Leggett was born on 20 January 1776 in Baltimore County, Maryland, by the date on her memorial at Arnettsville. She married Andrew Arnett about 1792 and went with him to his land on Big Indian Creek in Monongalia County, Virginia.
She bore him at least ten children. The eldest daughter, Mary, called Polly, was born in 1794 and the youngest son, Thomas, about 1816.
Andrew made his will on 12 March 1824 and died that spring. He left her all his personal estate, to remain in her hands "for the support of my children to be disposed of as she may think proper so long as she lives." He also made her executrix of the will, beside a neighbor, David Musgrave.
She married Richard Price on 14 April 1825, a year after Andrew's death. The Revd William Hawkins married them, and the county register enters her as Elizabeth Arnett. Two months earlier the same minister had married her son Andrew to Rachael Toothman. A note in the margin of the will book names her as Elizabeth Price, which is the name she carried for the last fifty years of her life.
She outlived Andrew by more than fifty years and her son-in-law Charles Glasscock by thirty five. Her daughter Polly was a widow at Arnettsville from 1840, a few miles from her mother, for the rest of her mother's life.
She died on 2 February 1875 at Arnettsville, two weeks after her ninety ninth birthday, and is buried in the Fetty-Hogue Cemetery there with her first husband. Her daughter Polly was buried in the same ground three years later.
Her surname comes from the Glasscock family's own account, printed in 1912, which names Polly as the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Leggett) Arnett and says that her mother, surviving Andrew, married a Price.
