Arnett Glasscock was named Arnett, Arnettsville is named for the Arnetts, and handing a mother's maiden name to a son is the oldest habit in that country.
West Virginia county marriage records, Monongalia County, 27 August 1814: CHARLES GLASSCOCK married POLLY ARNETT. She was born on 6 November 1794 and died on 15 July 1878 at Arnettsville, where she is buried. Polly is what everybody called her, Mary is what the clerk wrote when her son married in 1858, and both are on her stone.
And the court named her children for her. Monongalia County Court, envelope 465, 1840: *Polly Glasscock, guardian [for] Daniel, Letitia, Arnett, Charles and Imlah Glasscock, infant children*, with Stephen Glasscock standing surety on the bond beside her. She signed it with a mark.
That document does two things at once. It puts Charles in the ground before 1840, and it makes Arnett her son on a contemporary court record rather than on a census inference twenty years later.
She was a widow for at least thirty eight years. The 1850 census of Monongalia County has her at fifty six, heading her own household with six children in it. A later chancery suit sets off her dower in her husband's land and divides the rest among the children, and it calls her the widow of the said Charles Glasscock deceased. She died in the village her own family had given its name to.
