Elizabeth Meigs
Elizabeth Meigs was a daughter of John Meigs and his wife Tamzin Fry, and a granddaughter of Vincent Meigs, who had come to New England from Devon or Dorset. Her eldest sister, Mary, was born in England in 1633, and her brother John in 1640, so she was probably born in the 1630s. Her family lived at Weymouth and Rehoboth in Massachusetts and moved to New Haven about 1644.
In 1650 or 1651 she married Richard Hubbell, a young Englishman who had sworn the oath of fidelity at New Haven in 1645. Their first son, John, was born at New Haven about 1652. In 1653 the family moved to Guilford, where her own parents and grandfather had also settled. There she bore Richard in 1654, James in 1656, who died on 2 December the same year, Samuel on 6 November 1657, Elizabeth on 16 November 1659, Ebenezer, and Mary about 1661.
In the 1660s the family moved to Fairfield, where her last child, Martha, was born. Her husband became one of the largest landholders in the town. She died there some years before 1688, and he married again soon after.
