Mary Hubbell
Mary Hubbell was born at Guilford, Connecticut, about 1661, a daughter of Richard Hubbell and his first wife, Elizabeth Meigs. Her brothers and sisters born before her, all at Guilford except the eldest, were John, Richard, James, who died as a baby in 1656, Samuel, Elizabeth and Ebenezer. Her sister Martha was born after the family moved to Fairfield.
When she was a small child her father moved the family to Fairfield. He settled on the Pequonnock side of the town and became one of its largest landholders. Her mother died there some years before 1688, and her father married twice more.
About 1680 she married James Newton, a young man of Fairfield whose father had been one of the town's first planters. Their first child, Dorothy, was born on 22 March 1681. Six more followed: Alice in 1686, James in 1690, Ann in 1692, Israel in 1694, Mary, baptised in 1699, and Abigail in 1703 or 1704. On 8 March 1695/6 she was admitted to full communion in the Fairfield church, fifteen months after her husband.
Her father died in 1699 and left her a legacy in money, written in his will "to d. Mary w. of James Newton". By 1703 she and her family had moved to Kingstown, Rhode Island, where her husband held a farm on Boston Neck. About 1713 they went on to the new town of Colchester, Connecticut. There her husband became a selectman, a deputy to the General Assembly and captain of the town's trainband.
She died at some date after 1699 and before 1 January 1734/5, when her husband married again. The place of her death and burial is not recorded.
