Elizabeth Remching
Elizabeth was the wife of Richard Remching of Carbrooke, in Norfolk, who held the manor there on a lease. Her maiden name is not known. Her children were Edward, Elizabeth, Anne, Mary, Richard, Thomas and Henry, and four of them were baptized at Carbrooke between 1549 and 1553.
Her husband made his will in March 1567 and was buried in Carbrooke church on the 24th. He left her his lands in Carbrooke and elsewhere, made her his executrix and residuary legatee, and charged her with the portions of seven children, three of them daughters who were to have twenty pounds each at marriage. She proved the will on 9 May 1567.
She lived twenty eight years as a widow. Her daughter Elizabeth married Richard Lincoln of Hingham in 1574 and died while her son Edward was small. Her daughter Mary married John Kett of Wymondham and had seven daughters. By 1595 Elizabeth was living at Wymondham herself.
She made her will on 14 April 1595. It opens: "I Elizabethe Remchinge of Wymondham in the countie of Norff widowe beyng weake in bodye but of whole and perfect memory (god be praysed therfore) do make..." She was dead by 24 May, when it was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the archbishop's court that proved the wills of people with property in more than one diocese.
She asked to be buried in Carbrooke church, in her husband's grave. Her burial is not entered in the Carbrooke register, and Lea and Hutchinson think she was buried at Wymondham. They note that she left nothing to her dead daughter Elizabeth's husband, Richard Lincoln, or to Elizabeth's son Edward.
