Elizabeth Remching

b. 1548 · Carbrooke, England
Born 1548, probably Carbrooke, Norfolk, England
Father: Richard Remching
Mother: Elizabeth Remching
Children include Edward

Elizabeth Remching was the eldest daughter of Richard Remching of Carbrooke, in Norfolk, and of his wife Elizabeth. Her father held a lease of the manor and Commandery of Carbrooke, the former house of the Knights Hospitallers, a military religious order. Her sister Anne was baptized at Carbrooke on 23 September 1549, and Lea and Hutchinson put Elizabeth's own birth about 1548.

Her father made his will on 12 March 1566/7. "To my daughter Elizabeth Remchinge, £20 at 21 or marriage." Her brothers Edward, Henry, Richard and Thomas and her sisters Anne and Mary were remembered in the same will, and her mother was left the lands and the residue. He was buried in Carbrooke church on 24 March. Elizabeth was then about eighteen and unmarried.

In 1574 she married Richard Lincoln of Hingham. A marriage settlement was made in the sixteenth year of Queen Elizabeth's reign. It settled the Hingham freehold on Richard, on her, and on the heirs of their two bodies. Her brother Edward Remching was one of the feoffees, the trustees who held the land for them. Their first son, Henry, was baptized at Carbrooke, her own parish, on 2 November 1574. He died young. Their second son was Edward.

She died while Edward was "an infant of tender years," as he put it in 1621. The year is not known. Her husband married three more times, and in 1616 his will left Edward nothing.

Her mother outlived her. When the widow Elizabeth Remching made her will at Wymondham in 1595, she remembered her grandchildren in every branch of the family. Lea and Hutchinson note that she left nothing to her dead daughter's husband, Richard Lincoln, or to Edward.

In 1621 Edward was sued in Chancery by his half-sisters. His answer called his mother a daughter of Edward Remching. Lea and Hutchinson show that this was a slip. Edward Remching was her brother, still a minor in 1567, and he was one of the feoffees of her marriage settlement. Her father was Richard.
