Elizabeth "Lizzie" Spreng was born in Philadelphia in 1879. Her obituary says she lived in Camden, across the Delaware River, for more than sixty years, so she came to Camden as a small child. Her surname was sometimes written Spring.
In 1898 she married Ferdinand Laird Jr. of Camden. Their first son, Charles Beacon Laird, was born there on 11 November 1898, when she was nineteen. In 1910 she was keeping house in Camden's Eighth Ward for Ferdinand and six children. Their family kept growing, and twelve of their children outlived her.
About 1920 the family was at Magnolia, a borough a few miles from Camden. Ferdinand died in 1927, leaving her a widow at about forty eight.
She died on Thursday night, 6 May 1948, in her home at 2303 South Seventh Street in Camden, after a long illness, at sixty nine. The Camden Courier-Post ran her obituary that Saturday:
"Mrs. Elizabeth Laird, 69, widow of Ferdinand Laird, died Thursday night in her home, 2303 South Seventh street, following a long illness. A native of Philadelphia, Mrs. Laird resided in Camden more than 60 years. Surviving are seven sons, Charles, Walter, Lester, Elwood, Harry, Frederick and Ferdinand, all of Camden; five daughters, Mrs. Clara Mehl, Mrs. Edna Spreng, Mrs. Thelma Waterfield and Miss Pauline Laird, all of Camden, and Mrs. Lena McNichol of Philadelphia; a sister, Mrs. Pauline Whiteley of Camden; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren."
The funeral was held at two o'clock on Tuesday in the house, and she was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Camden. Her stone there carries a cross and reads "Elizabeth Laird 1879 1948".
