Charles B. Laird
Charles B. Laird was born in Camden, New Jersey, on 11 November 1898. He was the first child of Ferdinand Laird, twenty, and Elizabeth Spring, nineteen. A family account gives his middle name as Bacon.
He grew up the eldest of a large family. In 1910, at eleven, he was in Camden's 8th Ward with his parents and five younger brothers and sisters. In 1920 the family lived at Magnolia, a small borough in Camden County. Charles was twenty-one and single, the eldest of ten children at home.
He married Veronica L. Coleman, a Philadelphia girl about five years younger than he was. A family account places the wedding on 26 October 1920, in Maryland. Their son Charles Howard Laird was born on 24 August 1921 at Magnolia, where Charles's parents lived. A daughter, June Evelyn Laird, was born in Camden on 31 July 1923.
In 1930 the family lived in the city of Camden. Charles was 31, Veronica 26, their son 8 and June 6. Ten years later they were still in Camden, in the 14th Ward, in the same house they had lived in during 1935. Charles was 41 and Veronica 36, with Charles junior, 18, and June, 16, at home.
When his son applied for a Social Security number in February 1937, at fifteen, he gave his parents as Charles B. Laird and Veronica L. Coleman. June named the same parents when she applied in July 1940. In November 1946 the young man married Virginia Laura Evans at Philadelphia, and the marriage record again names his father as Charles Laird and his mother as Veronica Coleman.
By 1950 Charles and Veronica had moved to Haddon Township, in the same neighborhood as their son. On 3 May 1950 Charles, 50, gave his work as locomotive engineer on the railroad. The same census taker, three pages earlier, wrote down his son as a railroad fireman. On a steam engine the fireman kept the fire and the boiler, and the engineer drove the locomotive. A family account gives his death as 26 November 1982 at Palm Beach, Florida, and his burial at Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, where his son was later buried.
