Elizabeth Vennall Brett
Elizabeth Vennall Brett was born about 1820 in the parish of St Mary, Dover. She was baptized on 4 February 1821 at the Dover and Buckland Wesleyan chapel, the daughter of William Henry Brett, a miller, and his wife Ann. Her middle name was her mother's maiden name: her parents had married at Folkestone in 1813 as William Henry Brett and Ann Vennall. The 1851 census gives her birth year as 1821, and her gravestone says she was 42 when she died in May 1862.
She first married John Pilcher at St James, Dover, on 28 May 1842. He was a French polisher, the son of a gardener. Their son John Pilcher was born at Dover in 1845. She was a widow by May 1846.
On 17 May 1846, at the church of St Lawrence in Hougham, she married George Dann, a printer from Rye. The index of that marriage misreads her father's name as William Henry Butt. They made their home at Buckland, a parish of Dover. The 1851 census there lists George as a "Printer Compositor," Elizabeth V. as his wife, their daughter Anne, aged four, their son George, aged one, and her son John Pilcher. Three more sons followed: Albert about 1851, William Henry in 1854 and Alfred Thomas in 1858. William Henry was baptised at Buckland on 7 January 1855 as the son of George Dann and "Elizabeth Venall."
Elizabeth died on 3 May 1862, aged 42. Her youngest child was not yet four. She was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's, Buckland. George married again in 1870. Her son William Henry left for America in 1871, and George himself died at St. Louis in 1895.
