Elizabeth Woodward

d. 1765
Died 1765
Children include Dorcas

Elizabeth Woodward was the wife of Israel Woodward of Taunton, Massachusetts, the son of John Woodward and Sarah Crossman. Her maiden name is not known. Her given name comes from a Woodward family genealogy of 1984, and no known record names her. Her marriage is not in the printed vital records of Taunton or Norton.

Her children were Abigail, who married David Harvey; Israel, who settled at Easton; Benajah, who married Abigail Harvey; Dorcas, who married Josiah Harvey; and Zerviah, who married Peter Pitts.

When she died is uncertain. The Taunton death records have a wife of Israel, her given name not written, who died in March 1765, and an Elizabeth, a widow, who died on 1 October 1768. Her husband died in December 1766. Neither the division of his estate nor his eldest son's quitclaim of 1769 mentions a widow, and no dower was set off. Dower was a widow's right to the use of a third of her husband's land for her life, and it had to be set off if she was living. So she had probably died before him, and the wife who died in March 1765 is likelier to be her than the widow of 1768.
