Ellen A Boughan
Ellen Agnes Reardon, called Nellie, was born on 21 March 1866 at Charlestown, Massachusetts, the daughter of Jeremiah Reardon, an Irish immigrant, and his wife Mary McNamara. Two older sisters, Hannah and Catharine, had died as babies at Charlestown in the winter of 1862. In 1880 she was fourteen and at school in Ward Two of Newton, where her father, 40, was keeping house with her and her sister Margaret, 15. By 1883 he had a grocery at the corner of Watertown and Adams Streets in Nonantum. Margaret married a Hartnett and died at Newton Centre in 1887, aged 22.
On 22 June 1891, at Newton, aged 25, she married Francis Henry Boughan, a house painter of the same age. They lived at 414 Watertown Street, Newton. Her eldest son, Joseph Francis, was born on 31 March 1892. Then came Gertrude Mary, born December 1894, Margaret Eleanor, 1897, Francis, 1898, who died at nine months, Katheryn Virginia, 1901, Genevieve, Ellen, a second Francis, 1907, and Arthur Robert, born 27 December 1909.
Frank died in May 1909 of lead poisoning, before Arthur was born. Two years later the second Francis, aged four, died of burns from a bonfire. Ellen raised the rest of the family on Watertown Street and stayed there the rest of her life; in 1941 she was still at 414 Watertown Street, and Arthur's gas station was at the same number. Her daughter Katheryn married an Army man, William W. Breau, and is buried at Arlington; her daughter Margaret married Edwin C. Varley and lived at Point Shirley, Winthrop.
Ellen died at Newton on 16 January 1948, aged 81, nearly forty years a widow. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, under a stone that reads "MOTHER / ELLEN A. BOUGHAN 1948", with Arthur, who died in 1958, and Gertrude Brady, who died in 1962, named beneath her.
