Jeremiah Reardon
Jeremiah Reardon was born in Ireland about 1840. His wife was Mary McNamara. Their daughter Hannah was born in June 1861, and a second daughter, Catharine, in 1862. The family was living at Charlestown, across the river from Boston, when both children died there that winter: Catharine on 12 December 1862 and Hannah, aged one, on 21 February 1863. The town clerk entered both deaths under the names of Jeremiah Reardon and Mary McNamara.
Two more daughters lived. Margaret was born about 1865, and Ellen, later called Nellie, on 21 March 1866 at Charlestown.
By 1880 Jeremiah had moved to Newton. The census of that year found him, aged 40, in Ward Two with Margaret, 15, and Ellen, 14, both at school, and no wife in the household. In 1883 the Newton directory listed him as a grocer at Watertown Street, corner of Adams, in the village of Nonantum, and lived at the same address.
Margaret married a Hartnett and died at Newton Centre on 14 May 1887, aged 22; her death record names her parents as Jeremiah Reardon and Mary. Ellen married Frank Boughan, a Newton painter, in 1891, and spent the rest of her life a few doors from her father's old corner, at 414 Watertown Street.
A Jeremiah Reardon, aged 70, died at Newton in 1902, the son of Patrick Reardon and Johanna Buckley, and was buried at Catholic Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown. He may be the same man. The 1880 census makes Jeremiah eight years younger than this man, and no record ties the two together.
