Ellen E. Waters
Ellen Waters was born at Hartford, Connecticut, on 11 September 1938, the eldest child of Robert H. Waters and Anna (O'Brien) Waters. Her father was a Hartford man who worked thirty-two years for the Hartford Steam Boiler Company; her mother had come from Castletownroche in County Cork. A sister, Barbara, followed in 1941, and a brother, Robert William. The 1950 census found the five of them together at Hartford.
On 15 April 1961 she married Louis J. Grossi of Bloomfield at Hartford, before a Roman Catholic priest. They had four daughters, Donna, Julia, Nicola and Susan, and they ran the Casino Cafe in Hartford together. For many years she led a Girl Scout troop. Before she retired she was a paraprofessional in the Bloomfield schools.
She was "Ma" to all, her family said when she died, and her doors were open to two-legged and four-legged strays. Her daughter Julia died in December 2015, and a grandson, A.J., died before her too. Ellen died peacefully at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain on Monday, 30 January 2017, aged 78. She had lived in the Hartford area all her life. The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home at Wethersfield received callers on 4 February, and the burial was private. She left her husband Lou, three daughters, her sister Barbara and her brother R. William, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
