Robert Harry Waters
Robert Harry Waters was born at Hartford, Connecticut, on 13 September 1910, the second child and first son of Harry Arthur Waters and Esther (Bloomquist) Waters. His father was Hartford-born; his mother had come from Sweden as a girl. He grew up in a house that never stopped filling: by 1930 he was the eldest boy of eleven children at home, from Dorothy, 18, down to Donald, a baby, with his father, 46, at the head of it.
He married Anna O'Brien, a young woman from Castletownroche in County Cork, in 1937. They were married fifty-seven years. Their children were Ellen, born in 1938, Barbara, born in 1941, and Robert William. In October 1940 he registered for the draft at Hartford. He enlisted in the Army at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, on 31 March 1944, served as a Technician Fifth Grade, and was discharged on 27 January 1946. The 1950 census found him back at Hartford with Anna and the three children.
He worked for the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company for thirty-two years before he retired. He lived in Hartford all his life. He died at Hartford Hospital on Thursday, 20 October 1994, aged 84. The funeral went from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home on Webster Street to a Mass at St. Augustine Church on Campfield Avenue, and he was buried with full military honors at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill, section 19, lot 105, under a bronze veteran's marker. He left Anna, his daughters Ellen Grossi of Bloomfield and Barbara Waters of Hartford, his son R. William of Charlotte, North Carolina, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, four sisters, a brother, and his godparents, Adrian and Mary Tyler of New Britain.
