Elliot Hamman
Elliott Howard Hamman, called Ott, was born on 18 April 1871 in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was one of the youngest children of Jacob Hamman and his second wife, Rebecca Booth. His father had come to Cromwell Township as a boy of eleven, hired out to farmers from fifteen, and built a farm of 150 acres into 5,000.
Elliott grew up in a large household. His full brothers and sisters were Robert, John, Jennie, Belle, Rhoda, William, Harrison and Louisa. He also had half brothers and sisters from his father's first marriage, to Sarah Rinker. In 1897 the family name was still written Hammond, and his brother William kept that spelling all his life.
On 26 September 1893 Elliott went before the clerk of the Orphans' Court at Huntingdon for a marriage license. He signed his application "E H Hammond". It gives his name as E. Howard Hammond, a farmer of Cromwell Township, "Twenty-one Apl. 18, 1893", and his parents as "Jacob & Rebecca Hammond". The bride was Jennie Flasher, also of Cromwell Township, "Twenty one June 27, 1893", who "Lives with parents", a daughter of "Geo. W. and Elizabeth Flasher". The clerk wrote that "neither party ever married before". Two days later, on 28 September 1893, J. M. Cutshall married them in Springfield Township, Huntingdon County. They had eleven children: Claire, born 1895; Earl, 1897; Sylvia; Golda, 1900; Emma, 1902; William; Hazel; Mildred, 1910; Myrtle, 1912; Lester, 1913; and Marvin, 1914. Myrtle died in 1929, still in her teens.
In June 1900 Elliott and Jennie lived in Cromwell Township in the house next to his parents, on the same census sheet. He was a farmer on a farm he owned under a mortgage, and they had four children, the youngest a baby girl. Elliott was a farmer all his working life. His farm was in Hill Valley, and he lived there until a few years before his death. Some time after the children were born, he and Jennie separated. When their son Earl's first wife, Laura, died in 1922, Jennie took in Earl's newborn son Paul and raised him.
Elliott died at his home in Shirley Township on Saturday, 18 November 1944. He was 73. He is buried in Monroe Valley Cemetery at Rockhill Furnace, where his parents lie. Jennie outlived him by nineteen years.
