Rebecca Booth was born on 23 October 1827, the date cut on her gravestone. Her death certificate gives 26 October 1828. She was a daughter of William Booth and his wife Jane. Her brothers and sisters included John, William Harrison, Elizabeth, Jane Anne, later Everhart, Robert, Eleanor, later Ramsey, and Diannah, later Cromwell.
She became the second wife of Jacob Hamman, a farmer of Cromwell Township in Huntingdon County. His first wife, Sarah Rinker, had died leaving children of her own. Jacob had started with nothing, hiring out to other farmers as a boy of fifteen. In 1856 he bought a farm of 150 acres, and he went on adding to it until he owned 5,000 acres.
Rebecca and Jacob had nine children: Robert, John McClellen, born 1862, Jennie, 1863, Samantha Belle, 1865, Rhoda, 1866, William, 1867, Harrison, Elliott Howard, born 18 April 1871, and Louisa. Robert and Harrison died before 1897. William kept the old spelling Hammond all his life.
The census taken on 30 July 1860 already finds Rebecca in Jacob's house in Cromwell Township, at 33, with the eight children of his first marriage, the youngest of them five. In June 1900 she and Jacob had been married 40 years, and she told the census taker she had borne eight children, seven of them living. Their son Elliott and his family lived in the next house. Jacob died in August 1902. Rebecca lived another twelve years and died on 24 May 1914. She is buried in Monroe Valley Cemetery at Rockhill Furnace, under the one marker she shares with Jacob, his first wife Sarah and their little daughter Elender.
