Emeline Steadman
Emeline Steadman was born on 26 January 1842, the daughter of John Steadman and of O-we-na, a Choctaw woman of Towson County. Both her parents were dead by 1899. She married Vinson W. Tims, and they had at least eight children between about 1864 and 1885: James Brown, Mitchell, Betsy, John, Robert, Willie, Rosie Roseanna and Calvin Perry. Vinson died in October 1891.
On 24 April 1899, as a widow of 57 living in Towson County with her post office at Doaksville, she applied to the Dawes Commission to enroll herself and the three children still at home: Johnny, 26, Rosanna, 18, and Calvin, 14. She was enrolled as a Choctaw by blood, one quarter, roll number 1947; she had been on the 1896 roll as Emeline Tims. Her older sons Mitchell, Robert and Willie had cards of their own.
Rosanna married James Wilson that September. When Rosie's first son, Islam, was born on 10 August 1900, Emeline was the midwife, and she signed the affidavit herself. She died on 16 March 1918 and is buried at High Hill Cemetery in Choctaw County. Her stone reads EMELINE TIMS, Born Jan. 26, 1842, Died Mar. 16, 1918. A photograph of an elderly woman in a checked dress and shawl, seated outdoors, is kept by the Tims family as her portrait.
