Emily H. was born in 1837 in what became West Virginia and married James Meadows about 1853, at about sixteen.
The 1880 census of the Hannan District, Mason County has her at forty three, keeping house, with eight children including Semma N., aged six.
She died at Guyandotte in Cabell County in August 1906, aged sixty nine, and her age on that record and on both censuses agrees to the year, which is rarer than it sounds.
Her maiden name is not on any of it. The 1906 return falls in the years when West Virginia had stopped asking for parents and had not started again, so it gives her age and her county and nothing else.
There is a candidate and it is not claimed. Ohio county marriages: JAMES MEADOWS married EMILY EDMUNDS OR EDWARDS at Lawrence County, Ohio on 22 February 1854. Lawrence County is one river crossing from the ground they farmed, the year is right against forty seven years married in 1900, and the indexer could not decide between Edmunds, Edmonds and Edwards from the same hand. But the return carries no ages and no parents, so nothing on it separates this couple from another of the same two common names.
