Emily Maria Croome was born at Cainscross, Gloucestershire, in the spring of 1845. Her birth was registered in the Stroud district in the April to June quarter. Her father, Thomas Clutterbuck Croome, was a solicitor. Her mother, Mary Ann Myers, had been born at Woolwich in Kent.

In 1851 she was five and living at Stonehouse, near Stroud, in her father's household. Her brothers and sisters there were Elizabeth, Thomas Myers, Caroline Louisa, Frances Mary and Mary Ann Ellen. Another brother, Frederick Henry, appears with the family in 1871. She was the fourth of the daughters.

Her father died in August 1859, when she was fourteen. He was buried at Cainscross. In 1871 she was living at Painswick with her widowed mother.

On 1 August 1872 she married the Rev. Thomas Roach, a Cambridge wrangler and assistant master at Repton School in Derbyshire. The marriage was registered at Stroud. He was thirty and she was twenty-seven. His father had been curate of Painswick thirty years before.

She bore twelve children in sixteen years. The first, Francis Handley, was baptized at Repton in 1873. Harry was born about 1875 in Oxfordshire. The other ten were baptized at St John the Evangelist, Clifton, Bristol, between 1876 and 1889. Her husband taught at Clifton College from 1875 to 1877, and the family stayed at Clifton through 1891. The 1881 census gives her birthplace as "Cairncross".

By 1895 they had moved to Owslebury House in Hampshire, and by 1903 to Downside, at Twyford near Winchester. Her husband died there on 11 November 1904. She was fifty-nine.

She lived on at Twyford for more than thirty years, with two of her daughters. Her sons went far. Osbert founded a school in New York State and died at Bronxville in December 1934. Edward, as Edward Keith-Roach, governed the district of Jerusalem. Francis was a clergyman at Lincoln.

An Emily M. Roach, aged ninety-one, died in the Winchester district in the first quarter of 1937. The name, the age and the district all fit her, and she probably died then, at ninety-one.
