Thomas Clutterbuck Croome
Thomas Clutterbuck Croome was christened at Randwick, Gloucestershire, on 5 May 1807. The register names him as the son of Thos Croome and Elizabeth. His father was an attorney of Stroud who had bought the Manor of Painswick in 1804. His mother was Elizabeth Clutterbuck, the youngest daughter of Samuel Clutterbuck of Cainscross, and he carried her surname as his middle name. The 1851 census gives his birth as 1806, at Randwick.
On 11 October 1831 he married Mary Ann Myers at Lewisham, in Kent. She had been born at Woolwich, a few miles away. A notice of the marriage was printed on 20 October 1831.
He practised as a solicitor, at first with his father as Croome and Son. The couple settled at Stonehouse, near Stroud, where their first child, Elizabeth, was baptized on 14 October 1832.
His father died in March 1839 and left him the Manor of Painswick, with lands in Painswick and Stroud. He proved the will on 20 April 1839 as the son and sole executor. By 1843 he was described as Lord of the Manor of Painswick.
In the 1851 census he was a solicitor at Stonehouse, with his wife and six children. They were Elizabeth, Thomas Myers, Caroline Louisa, Frances Mary, Emily Maria and Mary Ann Ellen. Another son, Frederick Henry, born about 1841, appears with the family in 1871. His eldest son carried his mother's surname, Myers, as a middle name, as he himself carried Clutterbuck.
He died on 10 August 1859. The death was registered at Upton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire, some way from home. He was buried at Cainscross, near Stroud, and a family notice of his death appeared on 17 August. Probate was granted on 9 September 1859 to his widow, Mary Anne Croome, and his eldest son, Thomas Myers Croome.
In 1872 his fourth daughter, Emily Maria, married the Rev. Thomas Roach. The Cambridge record of that marriage describes her as the daughter of "Thomas C. Croome, Esq., deceased, of Painswick".
