Emma Josephine Gaylord
Emma Josephine Gaylord was born at Greig, Lewis County, New York on 25 August 1852, daughter of Edwin Gaylord and Lydia Ann Noulton, the founders of the Methodist church at Greig. She married Alfred Perkins and went west with him to Blue Springs, Nebraska, in its early days, and in the 1890s to Colorado.
At Sunset, in the mountains west of Boulder, Alfred ran the stage line to Boulder until the Denver, Boulder and Western railroad came up and ended it. Then the two of them kept the Columbia Hotel at Sunset for about fifteen years. When he died in 1915 the hotel was sold. In her later years she lived in Boulder.
She was a Methodist all her life, and in Boulder she belonged to the church's missionary societies and the Ladies Union. She had a stroke early in October 1929 and died at her daughters' house at 347 Pearl Street on 13 October, aged seventy seven. Two of her grandsons, Milton and Elmer Bryant, were among those who carried her coffin. She is buried at Sunset beside Alfred. Through her father the Gaylord line runs back to the immigrant William Gaylord of the Mary and John, 1630.
