Edwin Gaylord was born about 1820 at Colebrook, Connecticut, a son of Joseph Gaylord and Caroline Seymour. When he was five his parents moved to Turin, in the Black River valley of Lewis County, New York, where his father and his uncle Alva Seymour had bought a farm of two hundred acres. Behind Joseph stand Philemon Gaylord of Norfolk and a line of Connecticut Gaylords reaching back to the immigrant William Gaylord of the Mary and John, 1630. Edwin had a sister, Mary C., two years older.

He joined the Methodist Episcopal church at thirteen and was an active member all his life. At twenty five, in 1845, he married Lydia Ann Noulton, a daughter of Harvey Noulton and Hannah Ann Halleck. Their daughter Emma Josephine was born in 1852, one of seven children who lived to bury him.

In 1855 the New York state census found him heading a household at Turin. His father Joseph, sixty five, and his mother Caroline, sixty, were living with him. The enumerator wrote his wife down as Jane, aged twenty eight. For more than forty years he and Lydia Ann lived at Greig, where they founded the Methodist church. Later his father-in-law, Harvey Noulton, made his home with them for years and died under their roof in 1891.

Edwin died suddenly at his home in Greig early on Sunday 7 July 1901, aged eighty one, after a few hours' illness. He was buried from the Methodist church on the Wednesday, the Rev. Mr. Kline conducting, and lies at Sands Cemetery in Greig. Lydia Ann's name is cut on the same stone.
