Emma Maudella Brookshier was born on 10 February 1894 at Centerview, in Johnson County, Missouri, by her family's record, and Missouri is her birthplace in every census. Her mother was Jane Brookshier, who is named on the record of Emma's marriage to Thomas Henry Hubbs in Canadian County, Oklahoma, about 1909. She was about fifteen.
Her first child, Dessie Mae, was born at Calumet in January 1911, when Emma was not yet seventeen. Over the next twenty years she raised at least nine children while the family moved through Arkansas and Oklahoma: Pottawatomie County in 1920, Greer County in the mid-1920s, and Cushing in Payne County in 1930, where she was thirty-six with seven children at home, the youngest, Rosetta, a baby. By 1940 the family was at Lewis, in Montezuma County, Colorado, where her daughter Dessie married Orin Westfall and raised five girls.
Emma was widowed in February 1967. She died in Montezuma County on 9 June 1971, aged seventy-seven, and was buried beside Tom at the Sunnyside Cemetery at Lewis under their shared stone.
