Dessie Mae Hubbs
Dessie Mae Hubbs was born on 26 January 1911 at Calumet, in Canadian County, Oklahoma, the eldest child of Thomas Henry Hubbs, an Illinois man, and Emma Maudella Brookshier, who was born in Missouri and was not yet seventeen. Her parents had married in Canadian County. The family moved often in her girlhood: her brother Jessie and her sister Daisy were born in Arkansas, and the census of January 1920 found the Hubbses in Forest Township, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. She was in school at Granite, in Greer County in the southwest of the state, in 1924 and 1926.
In April 1930 she was nineteen and single, at home with her parents and six brothers and sisters in Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma, the oil town that Lewis and Helen Risenhoover left for Colorado the same year. In 1935 the Hubbses were living in rural Payne County, and by 1940 they had come west to Lewis, in Montezuma County, Colorado.
At Lewis she married Orin Kellogg Westfall, called Tub, a farmer and beekeeper seven years older. They had five daughters, Nina Mae, Neoma Joyce, Wanda Lee, Olinda and Dixie, all girls, and the census of April 1950 found her at thirty-nine, entered as Dossie, with Orin and the three eldest. Orin died in October 1973. She lived on for twenty-seven years.
She died at Cortez on Monday, 14 August 2000, aged eighty-nine. Her funeral was held at noon on 19 August at the First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she was buried beside Orin at the Lewis cemetery. Her five daughters survived her, with her sisters Daisy Cox of Mancos and Rosetta Brinkerhoff of Cortez, her brother Roy Lee Hubbs, twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
