Ernest Bates Loman
Born November 21, 1897 in McClellan Township, Jefferson County, Illinois, son of John Washington Loman and Eliza Hicks. His birth record settles the middle name the later papers mangled into Batist, Batise, and Bateze: it was Bates. The family moved to Benton in the Franklin County coal field, where the 1920 census finds him at twenty-two, newly married to a first wife written as Ima, living with his parents. That marriage produced John Edward and Everett John. He then married Waunita Dixon, twenty-one years his junior, from another Franklin County family, and the couple followed the coal north to Tovey in Christian County, where his 1942 draft card was filed. Ernest Jr., Nancy, Carol, and LaDonna followed. The 1940 census has the family in South Fork Township, the 1950 census at Morrisonville. He was still working at the Freeman Crown Mine at Farmersville when he died at home on December 3, 1968, at seventy-one, and is buried at Morrisonville City Cemetery.
