John Washington Loman was born on 23 January 1878 in McClellan Township, Jefferson County, Illinois, the youngest of the nine children in his father's 1880 household. On 8 September 1897, at Mount Vernon, he married Eliza Ellen Hicks. He was twenty-two and she was fifteen.

They farmed the McClellan ground for twenty years and are there in the censuses of 1900 and 1910. Then, like most of southern Illinois, they went where the work was: by 1920 the family was at Benton, in Franklin County, which had produced no coal at all in 1900 and had become the largest coal-producing county in Illinois by 1917. Fourteen deep shafts were sunk there between 1904 and 1910 into the Herrin No. 6 seam, and the county's population went from twenty-six thousand in 1910 to fifty-seven thousand in 1920, nearly two thirds of the newcomers immigrants.

He died that same August, on 30 August 1920, at forty-two. He was carried back to McClellan Township and buried on the ground he was born on.
