Esther Richards
Esther Richards was born in June 1673, the fourth child of Obadiah Richards and his wife Hannah Andrews. Her parents were members of Mr. Hooker's church at Farmington, Connecticut. On 14 March 1679/80 she was baptised there together with her sisters Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth and Sarah and her brother Obadiah, six children of one family at a single service. Her father was one of the thirty original proprietors of Waterbury.
On 16 August 1692, at nineteen, she married Ephraim Warner of Waterbury. He was a son of John Warner of Farmington and Waterbury, and he became the town's physician. Their first child, Margaret, was born on 16 February 1693 and died the next month. After her came Ephraim in 1695, who died at nine; Benjamin in 1698, later a physician himself and known as "Doctor Ben"; John in 1700, later a deacon of Northbury; Obadiah in 1702/3; and Esther, Ephraim and Ebenezer.
The family moved with her husband's practice. They lived at Willow and Grove streets in Waterbury until 1701, then on Buckshill and on Cook Street, and by 1703 at Woodbury, where Obadiah was baptised in May of that year. In April 1714 the town of Waterbury voted to encourage the doctor to come back, and they returned.
In April 1738 her husband deeded their house at Cook and Grove streets to their son Ephraim. He reserved the use of half the property "during his life and during the life of his wife." She was widowed in August 1753. Another account gives her death as 16 August 1762, without a source.
