Eugene S. Meramble
Eugene S. Meramble was born at Washington, in the hills of Litchfield County, Connecticut, on 12 October 1865. The Meramble name had been in the neighboring towns of Washington, Roxbury and Woodbury since the early 1800s.
He went to work young. In 1880, at 14, he was living as a farm laborer in the household of George E. Emmons at Morris, a few miles north.
He spent his working life on the railroad. The Shepaug Railroad ran about 32 miles from Hawleyville, in the town of Newtown, up the Shepaug valley through Washington and Roxbury to Litchfield. Eugene Meramble was remembered as a fifty-year employee of the line. A photograph from about the 1880s shows him standing in front of the railroad's Engine No. 3.
He married Annie Lyons, who was born in Ireland about 1862. Their daughter Ida was born in 1893 and their son Eugene William at Newtown on 8 November 1894, at the southern end of the line. A daughter, Julia, died at Bethel on 29 December 1899.
By 1917 the family was settled at Litchfield, the northern end of the line, and Eugene answered the state's military census questionnaire there that year. In 1920 he was 54 and living in Litchfield with Annie, Ida and Eugene. Annie died in 1924.
As a widower he lived with his daughter Ida and her husband, James T. Moraghan, in Litchfield. He was there, aged 74, in 1940, and still there, aged 84, in April 1950. He died at Torrington on 30 September 1950 and was buried at St. Anthony Cemetery in Litchfield, under a family stone carved MERAMBLE between two wreathed crosses.
His parents are not proved. A John Nathan Meramble (1832-1898), a Civil War soldier, and his wife Maria Smith (1843-1898), both buried at Washington, are given as his parents on his memorial, together with brothers and sisters named Ida, Celia, Jennie, Jessie and John Henry.
