Eugene William Meramble was born at Newtown, Connecticut, on 8 November 1894. His father, Eugene S. Meramble, worked for the Shepaug Railroad, the branch line that ran north from Hawleyville in Newtown up the Shepaug valley to Litchfield. His mother, Annie Lyons, was born in Ireland. He had an older sister, Ida, born in 1893, and a younger sister, Julia, who died as a small child at Bethel in December 1899.

The family later settled at Litchfield. When the United States entered the First World War he registered for the draft in New York City, giving his birth at Newtown. He served in the Army from the autumn of 1917 into the first weeks of 1919, and he appears on the muster rolls from 20 September 1917 to 31 January 1919. In 1920 he was back at Litchfield, aged 25, living with his parents and his sister Ida.

By 1930 he had married Esther, a Waterbury girl about eight years younger, and the couple were living in Queens. Their son Eugene David was born in New York City on 19 March 1931. A daughter, Esther Ann, followed on 12 July 1935, born at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York. In 1940 the family of four lived in Manhattan, in the 23rd Assembly District, at the same address they had in 1935.

Eugene Meramble was a New York City police officer. In 1942, aged 47, he filled out the registration for older men that the Selective Service took that spring, still living in the city. When he retired from the police, the family moved to Waterbury, Connecticut, his wife's home town. The census of April 1950 found him there with Esther and their daughter, then 14. Their son, 19, was living in Cattaraugus County, New York.

Esther Ann was valedictorian of her eighth grade class in Waterbury and was homecoming queen at Waterbury Public High. In June 1956 she married Arthur J. Hessburg, a Georgetown law student, at Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury.

Eugene William Meramble died on 6 May 1964 in Connecticut, aged 69.
